“Well, hello, Emma,” Norma said a few minutes later, when Emma walked up to their wagon.

“Mama said she doesn’t feel like making supper and said for me to come eat with you. Is that all right?”

“Why of course it’s all right, sweetheart.”

“Oh, goodie,” Precious said.

The next day dawned cool and Emma wrapped up in her blanket, then dozed off again. She awakened a short time later and lay there for a few minutes, wondering why she hadn’t been called for breakfast. She could smell the cooking fires of the others, but when she stepped down from the wagon, she was surprised to see that her mother hadn’t even started their fire.

“Mama, I’m hungry,” Emma said. “Why haven’t you fixed our breakfast?”

Emma’s parents were lying together under the wagon.

“Mama, Daddy, why are you still asleep? Everyone else is up, I can hear them, and I can smell the bacon. It’s time for breakfast.”

When Emma still got no reply from her parents, she reached down and gently shook her mother’s shoulder.

“Do you want me to go have breakfast with Precious?”

When she got no response, she shook her father’s shoulder.

“Daddy, what’s wrong with Mama?” Emma asked. “I can’t wake her up.”

She shook his shoulder. “Daddy, wake up. Mama, Daddy? MAMA, DADDY, WAKE UP!”

When she could wake neither of them, she grew more frightened than curious.

“Mama? Daddy?”

Emma ran to the Baker wagon.

“Precious! Mr. Baker! Precious! Mr. Baker!”

Precious, hearing the call and recognizing something disturbing about it looked up at her mother.

“Mama, something’s wrong with Emma.”

“Go to her, Precious. See what it is,” Norma replied.

Precious, who had been helping her mother cook breakfast, ran back to meet Emma.

“Oh, Precious,” Emma said, and Precious could see tears streaming down her cheeks. “Mama and Daddy won’t wake up. I’m scared.”

“Let’s go get Daddy,” Precious said.
